City and Guilds 3901 (Motor Vehicle Studies) or the ABC award and Certificate at level 1)

The course works towards giving learners an opportunity to achieve a City and Guilds qualification in Motor Vehicle Studies (3901).City and Guilds are one of the UK’s leading provider of vocational qualifications. It gives the learner an opportunity to develop a range of skills that may be carried forward to higher qualifications at a later stage. Learners have to participate in all areas to gain the certificate including basic car maintenance and repairing body work. The final list of units is not yet set as it will work to match the ability and enthusiasm of the learner.

Examples of areas of study will include units such as:

  • Braking system
  • Fuel and exhaust system
  • Steering and suspension system
  • Wheel and tyre system
  • Body and interior cleaning and care
  • Body repair techniques
  • Vehicle panel preparation techniques
  • Refinishing process techniques

Students receive credit for each unit and acquire the full award on completion of 10 units. They will also study health and safety practice in the working environment.


There will be some written work in order to complete your portfolio but the majority of the work is practical. Collecting evidence for the folder will involve practical assessments where photographic evidence will be used together with short tests and work books completed in theory lessons. Learners will have the opportunity to work on actual vehicles.

Additional information

The college is an adult environment and this means that there are strict rules in place regarding health and safety and behaviour. For example learners are expected to wear protective equipment at all times in the work shops and wearing jewellery is not appropriate. There is an entry process and interview for those interested in the course.
