City and Guilds Salon Services

The course is a Level 1 qualification and is accredited by City and Guilds. The qualification carries a pass, merit and distinction mark and is equivalent to a D Grade GCSE. Learners will gain insight into the hairdressing and beauty therapy industry while practicing basic practical skills.

Areas Studied

There are 5 units that must be studied as part of the course.

  • Unit 01 – Finding out about customer service
    You will collect information using a range of methods to complete the assignment. Tasks include, exploring the image of different salons in your area and that the customer looks for in choosing a salon.
  • Unit 02 – Basic salon reception duties
    This unit looks at the different systems used by salons for appointments, ordering products and the services they provide. It will look at the range of products provided and how their displays etc improve customer case and facilities.
  • Unit 03 – Personal presentation
    You will explore the different styles of dress or uniforms, hairstyles and makeup worn by stylist or therapists in the salon.
  • Unit 4 - Following Health and Safety practice
    This is an important part of any course. You will learn about all aspects of health and safety relating to you, your employer and customers.
  • Unit 9 – Industry and occupational awareness
    This does sound a little daunting but it links in with all the other units you will have studied. You will find out about jobs and careers in the industry, skills and qualifications needed and your rights as an employee.

You will also be able to complete two other units which will make up the practical elements of the course including Introduction to hairdressing, applying basic makeup and providing basic manicures and nail treatments.

Assessments

Written work will involve research from a range of sources including the internet and publications. You will produce a folder and complete assignments. There is also a short multi choice question paper at the end of each unit. Practical assessments will be made in the salon.

Additional Information

There are strict rules in place regarding health and safety and behaviour. For example, jewellery must not be worn. All students are expected to participate by giving and receiving appropriate treatments. There is an entry process for those interested in the course. Due to increased demand for this course, students will also attend salons that have been developed for the purpose on the Croesyceiliog School site.
