Music at Croesyceiliog

The Music department at Croesyceiliog School are a busy and exciting department, with a constant stream of pupils rehearsaing and making music. There are bands, ensembles, choirs and performances happening all the time, and the pupils that participate are always preparing for concerts or events. Whether it is the annual school musical or showcase concert, or the newly introduced School Eisteddfod, the Music department are an active part of school life in Croesyceiliog. With 2 classrooms, each equipped with 15 computers and keyboards, pupils get a chance to experience many different areas of music. We also have a fully working recording studio, as well as rehearsal spaces and storage facilities for instruments. We work in conjunction with Gwent Music Service to provide instrumental tuition at very reasonable rates and are able to be taught by experienced instrumental teachers. We believe that ALL pupils should have the opportunity to experience music, and so we work hard to make sure that there are always chances for pupils to perform, compose, record, analyse and enjoy the subject.

At Key Stage 3, we introduce pupils to the elements that make up Music, leading them through performances and compositions and ending up with pupils forming a band and performing a cover song.

At Key Stage 4, we currently offer 2 routes to study Music. GCSE Music is examined through EDEXCEL and looks at music from the early Baroque to modern-day Pop and Jazz and music from around the world. BTEC Music is also examined through EDEXCEL and gives pupils the opportunity to experience music in the world of work, giving pupils the experience of how music can be relevant in different areas of life.

At Key Stage 5, pupils will study A Level Music through the WJEC, studying different pieces ranging from Bach to The Beatles, as well as gaining important performing, compsoing and appraising skills. Pupils will then go on to study about 20th and 21st Century Orchestral music, as well as in-depth study of Ravel’s ‘Piano Concerto in G Major’. Pupils will gain an insight into the skills required to study Music at further education, whether that be at Music College or University.
