Can you name the Torfaen Sixth Form/Post 16 Learning Centre?

It’s not really a catchy name is it?

Torfaen Council and Coleg Gwent need your help to choose a name for this new £20 million purpose built learning centre which will be the home of all English Language A Level education in the borough.

The centre will also offer level 2 and 3 vocational qualifications, foundation degrees and the Welsh Baccalaureate. It will serve all pupils in the borough and will become the pathway for students into higher education, training and employment.

Cllr David Yeowell, Torfaen’s Executive Member for Education said: ‘We want pupils and the community to get involved in suggesting a name and we also want to understand the reasons behind the suggestions. We’re looking for a name that will inspire and connect learners from across the borough and just as an aid, the final name will need to be bilingual so clever acronyms don’t always work.’

The consultation will run from June 4 until July 2 and the final name will be agreed by Coleg Gwent and the council and will be announced when construction starts in the next few months.

The new centre is replacing three English medium school 6th forms in the borough and will be managed and run by Coleg Gwent in partnership with the council. The centre has a fantastic location next to Morrisons in the centre of Cwmbran, with excellent links to public transport and all the facilities in the town centre.  The construction phase is expected to take 80 weeks and the new building will be handed over to the council and Coleg Gwent early in 2020 to allow pupil and parent tours of the new facilities.

To get involved visit our online consultation or visit our webpages at www.torfaen.gov.uk/learningcentre for more information on the curriculum, facilities and artist impressions of the building.

The Welsh Government believes that giving young learners a sound foundation for the future will benefit children and Wales as a whole in the long term. Parents and carers have a vital role to play in helping their children to learn and, more importantly, to enjoy school and learning.  The guide below will help explain what your child is learning in secondary school. It will give you some ideas about how to help your child and where to get more information, and will explain how their progress will be measured and reported to you.

Parents

Parents/carers

Our parents/carers play a key role in the school and support their children and the school community in many different ways. Our school continues to go from strength to strength and whilst most credit for this goes to our fantastic pupils, parents/carers make a huge contribution to our success.

We hope that this website provides all parents/carers with the information they need to support their child. The areas most useful on this website for parents/carers are key dates, uniform, contact details and year group areas although we are sure that every area of the website may provide you with helpful information.

We enjoy excellent communications with our parents/carers and events such as parents evenings are very well attended. We welcome all comments and suggestions from parents/carers and ask that you get in touch if there is something that you think we could improve. Many of our best developments have come from parents/carers suggestions. We recognise that there may be rare occasions when parents/carers are not happy with an aspect of school life. We have published our complaints procedure on the policy page. Parents/carers can be reassured that all concerns raised through this process will be dealt with sensitively and professionally. Again, as a community we understand that whilst we hope that parents/carers will not have a grievance with the school, when they happen it is an opportunity for us to make improvements.

As ever, we would like to thank of of our parents/carers for their ongoing support. You might like to keep in touch by following the school on twitter add twitter account.
