All pupils are taught National Curriculum subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, French or Spanish, Welsh (second language), Geography, History, IT, Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies and Drama.
In addition, the school's Personal Health and Social Education Programme is designed to make pupils aware of social, cultural and moral issues, as well as help them develop responsible attitudes in matters of health, relationships, work and studying.
In Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes. In Years 8 and 9 pupils are placed in ability groups (sets) for some subjects. Placement in a set is based on performance in individual subjects and is reviewed in the light of progress.
Spanish or French (depending on which language is not studied in Year 7) is introduced, as an additional subject, at the beginning of Year 8 for those pupils who have shown their linguistic ability in English, French or Spanish and Welsh in Year 7.
Provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs is flexible and designed to meet a variety of learning needs. Some pupils receive tuition in small Special Needs groups; others are supported in larger, mainstream classes. In other cases, appropriate equipment (e.g. lap top) is made available. These provisions are reviewed yearly.
